The Happy Flag Project
Jacquard Products is extremely proud to have sponsored the The Happy Flag Project in 2014, an initiative started by Carrie Bloomston of SUCH Designs to honor and welcome the Dalai Lama when he visited Birmingham, AL by blanketing the city in thousands hand-made prayer flags, each one unique. What a welcome! Thanks to everyone who participated (there were hundreds, if not thousands of you!), with special thanks to Carrie Bloomston and the instructors at UAB Department of Art & Art History (you know who you are) for shepherding so much beautiful fabric art into the world! Jacquard is proud to have sponsored this worldwide effort to honor the Dalai Lama's dedication to civil and human rights.
What is a prayer flag?
A prayer flag is a colorful, rectangular cloth, often found strung along mountain ridges high in the Himalayas. Commonly strung at sacred sites, traditional prayer flags include woodblock-printed texts (mantras) and symbols. Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to gods, which is a common misconception; rather, Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras are dispersed by the winds to spread goodwill and compassion across the globe. In this way, prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all.
