Michelle Killen

It wasn't until her mid 40s, after asking herself what she would do if she could do anything, that Michelle discovered the world of leathercraft and really found her passion as an artisan. While she is yet to hand make a pair of boots (her ultimate goal), Michelle has found her niche in colour work. Focusing on the time-intensive process of handtooling leather allows her to express her love for texture, producing a canvas that encourages playing with colour. Hearing of the joy experienced by someone upon receiving one of her pieces drives Michelle to continue to explore the boundaries of her craft while keeping her pieces grounded in everyday usable objects.

"I love working with Jacquard Neopaque and Lumiere acrylic paints and watching as the vibrant colours bring my tooling to life. I find the colours are really stable and working in thin layers allows me to blend (even in the hot, humid Queensland summer) and I get a lasting flexible finish that bends and moves with the leather without splitting or cracking. I also enjoy playing with the Pinata Inks for marbling leather and have recently started playing with Pearl Ex Powered Pigments to bring some extra dimension.”
