What do batik and encaustic have in common? Wax, of course! In this workshop, Susan Stover draws on her extensive background in textiles and painting to combine these two ancient art forms. Batik is a textile technique originating in Indonesia. It involves applying wax to fabric to create a pattern which resists the dye in the coloring process. The tools and methods of batik are very adaptable to painting with encaustic. This workshop will explore batik on fabric with the intention of incorporating the fabrics into encaustic painting. Students will be making lots of their own unique fabrics and will be encouraged to explore their own interests in mark-making and pattern. Demonstrations and discussions will illustrate how the fabrics can be used in an encaustic painting and the layering of fabric and encaustic can interact. Topics and assignments to include: stamp making, working with a tjanting tool, watercolor effects, layering fabric and color, batik, silk-painting, composition and art fundamentals. This class is intended for those with working experience of encaustic and are looking to expand their visual language. Featuring Jacquard’s Dye-Na-Flow Exciter Pack.
