Carolyn Doe
Mostly self-taught, Carolyn Doe has been working in batik on silk fabric for over 30 years. Her life-long excitement about fiber arts was influenced by her mother, a seamstress, and Carolyn’s inspiration for her artwork comes from the natural landscape surrounding her daily life: she’s lived many places including Alaska and Antarctica. Working mainly freehand, Carolyn also uses rough sketches and photographs as guides for her final pieces. She spends hours observing before going indoors to create.
“Batik has become my voice. When dye touches silk fabric it spreads like crazy. The wax creates a boundary. It is this dance of control/no control that captivates me for hours. Through this ethereal quality, I try to convey the essence of a place and of the creatures who dwell there.”
