World Cyanotype Day - 20/20 Photo Festival

In celebration World Cyanotype Day, 20/20 Photo Festival is planning public cyanotype-making events throughout Philadelphia on Saturday, September 11th followed by a pop-up exhibition of the finished images at Cherry Street Pier on World Cyanotype Day, Saturday, September 25th.

First discovered in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, the cyanotype process was initially utilized to make blueprints. In 1843, however, Anna Atkins - the first photographer to use the process to create photograms - self-published the book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, thus placing the process firmly within the realm of photography. To this day, cyanotype is widely employed in conjunction with botanical specimens, but contemporary artists have also found new and unique applications of the technique.

Join 20/20, and try your hand at this historic photographic process!

We will provide pre-coated cyanotype fabric (Jacquard Cyanotype Fabric Sheets), and you can bring negatives and objects to create photograms with or work with items available on-site.

If you’d like your work to be included in the pop-up exhibition, just leave it with the event organizer at your location and pick it up at Cherry Street Pier after the show.

Date: Sunday, September 12th, 10 AM – 2 PM

Locations: Penn Treaty Park in Fishtown, Historic Rittenhouse Town in Wissahickon Valley Park, Clark Park in West Philly, and more (TBD).
