Cyanotype Extravaganza at Ulna Art Studio

  • Ulna Art Studio 215 Southeast Morrison Street Portland, OR, 97214 United States (map)

Cyanotype Extravaganza: Explore the captivating and transformational process of cyanotypes with Rachel Mulder! Cyanotype is an alternative photographic process where light-sensitive chemicals are applied to a surface like paper or fabric, exposed to UV light, and developed with water to create brilliant blue and white images.

We will use our imaginations, chance, and the magic of the sun (or UV lamp, depending on the weather!) to create stunning and exploratory works of art. Wonderfully mysterious pictures appear when rinsed in water! Also known as “sun prints”, this accessible medium involves placing objects and materials onto treated paper, this process is filled with surprises, so bring your curiosity, trust and openness with you to this workshop!

All supplies are provided, and participants will get to make up to 6 individual works of art on high quality watercolor paper.

We will begin with an introduction to the process and after a brief demo, you will be invited to indulge in the the magical chaos of cyanotype. After lunch, you can expose your remaining cyanotypes (6 sheets total for each attendee, with an option to purchase additional chemically treated paper). If you’re feeling the frenzy, there will be additive/collage materials to play with using your finished works. Please contact instructor with questions at: redluMlehcaR@gmail.com

Masks are required for this class! We will provide KN95 masks and ask that you wear K95 or KN95 masks during this workshop.

Event Instructor: Rachel Mulder (she/her) is an artist who indulges in experientiality. She makes drawings using a variety of media that often yield printmakerly textures – residual effects from earning her BFA in Printmaking at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2007. A process-oriented artist, her work vacillates back and forth between the meticulous and obsessive to playful experimentation. Encouraging others (and herself) to create/exist more fully is a parallel passion of hers that braids itself into her visual work. www.rachelmulderart.com
